We have the depth, experience and resources to provide timely strategic legal services for all types of business transactions and disputes. The strength and diversity of the Alberta economy has enabled the Calgary office to develop a broad business law practice, including corporate/commercial, securities, oil and gas, electricity, tax, structured finance, private and public debt, banking, real estate, civil litigation and dispute resolution, regulatory, labour and employee benefits, intellectual property, and environmental matters.

The Calgary office has one of the largest and most comprehensive energy law practices in Alberta, offering full-service counsel to clients engaged in the energy industry.

The Calgary office's student program has built a reputation for providing students with a rewarding and educational experience by offering students:

  • The opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge by working with lawyers who are at the top of their game
  • A chance to participate in a leading education/professional development program and
  • An environment in which students may form lasting friendships with a large group of successful law students

There are many integral components to the Calgary office student program, all of which interact to ensure that each student's experience at Blakes is a positive one.  From rotation selections and mentoring, to an extensive professional development program, Blakes works hard to ensure that all students have a rewarding summer and/or articling term.

What truly sets Blakes apart is its commitment to pro bono work and the importance and significance that the Firm places on equity and diversity as a core value. The Firm strongly believes that engaging in pro bono work helps both the community and the development of our legal professionals. Moreover, the Firm actively seeks to be a leader among Canadian law firms in promoting equity and diversity in the legal profession.

Blakes actively seeks out students who have a strong desire to learn and be constantly challenged, who want to work hard and strive for excellence, who are intelligent, enthusiastic and motivated, and who thrive working both independently and in a team environment.

TESTIMONIALS

“After my summer at Blakes, I was surprised to discover that it is not the nature or importance of work that makes a firm great; it is the people and the culture. While I can assure you that I received challenging and compelling work, the difference at Blakes is that a high quality of work is coupled with a supportive and fun culture that encourages learning and is committed to cultivating great lawyers. It is truly the people, both lawyers and staff, that makes Blakes stand out above the rest.”

Shaun Parker, 2010, Second-Year Summer Student, University of Alberta

"From go-karting to legal research to golf tournaments to topical professional forums, Blakes really offers the full-meal-deal of summer experiences. Most of all, friendly and approachable partners, patient assistants, and fun-loving associates make Blakes a fast-paced and fun place to spend one's summer!"

Heather Richardson, 2010, Second-Year Summer Student, University of Calgary

“My summer at Blakes was an incredible experience from start to finish. The Lawyers and support staff are very friendly and approachable, which made it easy to seek out the type of work I was most interested in. The mentorship program was a fantastic resource; my mentor always made time for me and provided insightful answers to my many questions. I really enjoyed the social events throughout the summer, as they provided an excellent opportunity to get to know members of the firm in a less formal setting. Although Stampede Roundup was a memorable experience and is deserving of an honourable mention, the highlight of my summer was meeting all of the great people at Blakes, especially the other summer students. Throughout the course of the summer our student group became a very tight-knit team. This allowed us to support one another at the office but more importantly, provided the framework for amazing friendships I will have for years to come.”

Marcus Ostrowerka, 2010, First-Year Summer Student, University of Alberta

"What struck me most about my experience as a summer student at Blakes was the way that we summer students were immediately accepted as members of the team. Support staff, partners, associates, and articling students all went out of their way to ensure the summer students felt welcome - and their doors were always open if any of us needed help or advice. As a first-year summer student, I was so grateful for the level of support and encouragement I felt while working on projects that involved an area of law I had yet to learn about in school."

Melissa Jakobfi, First-Year Summer Student, University of Alberta

“Through an excellent mentorship program and the opportunity for top-tier work, Blakes takes a keen interest in fostering the talents of its students by providing a comprehensive and enriching experience. The people at Blakes are not only legal leaders - they are also business leaders who understand how to build success through teamwork and strong relationships. In this context students are able to learn under the country’s top legal practitioners in a collegial environment that values excellence and integrity.”

Alqaim Giga, First-Year Summer Student, University of Calgary.

Summer Student Program

The Calgary office hires both first and second-year summer students. Traditionally, the Calgary office hires eight to 12 summer students each year. The compensation and benefits package for summer students is competitive within the market.

Our recruitment of summer students is governed by The Law Society of Alberta regulations. For more information regarding these regulations, visit: http://www.lawsociety.ab.ca/files/regulations/Rules.pdf.

Upon arrival at Blakes in early May, students attend an orientation session that introduces them to the Firm and its resources and ensures that students are integrated into the Firm.

Our summer students are assigned to either a litigation or corporate rotation. They are often involved in projects outside of their assigned practice area, which we believe allows them to have a rich and well-rounded summer student experience.

Summer students are matched with mentors who are actively involved in training students and ensuring that students receive interesting and varied work assignments. Blakes has a long tradition of providing a strong foundation for legal careers through top-notch mentoring. Our partners benefited from the introduction and wise counsel of more senior members of the Firm, and the Firm benefits further when those lessons are passed onto our summer students.

Throughout the summer, students have the chance to participate in a range of social events. The social events are a great way to get to know the lawyers and other students at the Firm. Such events may include casual lunches, cocktails, parties, organized student events, and the annual golf tournament.

As an integral part of the Calgary office team, students are invited to participate in client functions.

Summer students receive informal evaluations throughout the summer and a formal evaluation at the end of July. At the end of the summer, summer students will learn if they will be hired back as articling students. Our goal in the evaluation system is to help each student develop their skills as lawyers in training.

Articling Student Program

Articling Rotation System

There is a formal rotation system for articling students in the Calgary office. This ensures that students obtain broad exposure to the principal areas of our practice under the individual guidance and supervision of experienced lawyers in each of these areas.

Each student’s rotation is tailored to suit their preferences. At the same time, we want our students to receive exposure to the core areas of our practice. We believe that our rotation program best allows us to develop and assess our students and gives them individual attention.

In the Calgary office, students do one rotation in each of litigation and corporate/commercial.

Mentoring

At each stage of a student's rotation, they are under the supervision of a designated lawyer who practises in that area.

The supervising lawyer ensures that the student receives a variety of work and helps train the student. As a result, our students are integrated into the day-to-day practice.

The supervising lawyers give students regular ongoing assessments of their performance on an informal basis. Three times during their articling year, students will be formally evaluated. This is done by the supervising lawyers after they have consulted with other lawyers in the office. These evaluations provide useful and constructive information for the students and afford students a formal opportunity to express their views on the Firm, the opportunities given to them, and the direction they would like to see for the balance of their articling year.

Professional Development

We have a series of approximately 35 in-house seminars to supplement our rotation program. The seminars cover topics ranging from the development of basic practice skills to introductions to specific practice areas.

Our lawyers and students are encouraged to participate in conferences and seminars, as speakers and as attendees. Conferences sponsored by professional bodies and industry are supplemented with our own Firm, student and office-wide seminars.

Social Events

Throughout the articling year, students have the chance to participate in a range of social events. The social events are a great way to get to know the lawyers and other students at the Firm. These include office holiday parties and a family Christmas party. We also have several lawyer/student events including dinners, a ski weekend, a golf day, and smaller practice group get-togethers.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation and benefits package for our articling students is competitive within the market. Our students are covered by Alberta Health Care (family coverage), extended medical coverage, a dental plan, an employee assistance program and a group accident plan. We also subsidize membership in a health club of the student's choice.

Articling students hired by the Firm also receive a C$5,000 bonus paid at the commencement of articles.

Because of our continued and steady growth, we are generally able to offer associate positions to a high percentage of our articling students. Our hireback ratios have always been very high.
